Architect Scott Marek Extends Legacy of Frank Welch With His Own Architectural Point of View
One of the homes that I am most excited to see is the one designed by Scott Marek. I am familiar with the exceptional work he did while working as the principal designer in the studio of Frank Welch, FAIA. The home Scott Marek designed on Deer Trail in the White Rock Lake neighborhood of White Rock Valley, just north of Flag Pole Hill, reflects the influence of Frank Welch while it introduces many of us to a neighborhood that does not receive a lot of attention.
Splendid Modern Home in the Spirit of Frank Welch and Reflects Neighborhood
This modern home at 7815 Deer Trail shows us how Scott Marek, AIA, is able to bring his own design sensibility to a home that also reflects the qualities of a Frank Welch design, but with a budget and materials more compatible with the neighborhood in which it was built. Instead of birch siding that Frank Welch used on several houses in the most polished and prestigious neighborhoods, here vertical 1 x 6 inch cedar siding was used. Providing interest and deep shadow lines are the 2 x 3 inch deep vertical batten spaced along the façade’s 2 x 6 vertical boards. On a small lot in a naturally forested environment, the skin of the home mimics the texture and shadows of tree bark as the home blends into its environment and is still surrounded by early traditional style homes. The unimposing façade allows a great sense of surprise when one enters the home and sees the expansive windows connecting the homeowners with sunlight and with their neighbors.
Scott Marek Often Uses a Stick Pattern Ceiling That Frank Welch is so Known For
On this modern home a heavier stick pattern of maple is used as a stair baluster. This pattern along the wall rises to the top of the one and one-half story ceilings, completing the composition and adding a natural warmth to this modern home. The materials in the home are also influenced by the Ju-Nel home the homeowners lived in previously.

Bang Dang and Rizi Faruqui Designed Modern Home in Henderson Neighborhood
Another home I am very excited about is a home designed by architects Bang Dang and Rizi Faruqui of FAR + DANG in the Henderson neighborhood. This is one of the neighborhoods making a transition to new homes. Bang and Rizi have rethought traditional 50’ x 150’ Dallas lots. These Dallas architects have pushed the 100 foot deep, two-story house to one side of the lot allowing an expanse of windows the length of the house to look into the dappled sun of the side garden from and through the first level rooms. A screened porch connects the garage and gym to the house.
East Dallas is now going through a second century of development. Rather than repeating a pattern of similar homes found in the original addition, these older neighborhoods are now adding new homes and new designs. FAR + DANG is such a good firm to influence the direction of this inner city neighborhood. Both of these architects were the principal designers of AIA award-winning homes when they were in the studio of Gary Cunningham, FAIA. Rizi’s work was also influenced by his time with Rem Koolhaas of OMA in the Netherlands and Bang’s work in the San Francisco firm of Stanley Saitowitz.
On this tour, in the Henderson neighborhood you will see an important modern home in an interesting neighborhood designed by architects with a large portfolio and who are still emerging as an important voice in Dallas.
Dan Shipley, FAIA, Honors and Accentuates Quiet Home by Original Architect Scott Lyons
With a ticket to the Premiere Party you will be able to visit this Highland Park home with the renovation design by architect Dan Shipley. On a corner Highland Park lot with a canopy of trees, this home with an inward focus blends into the environment. The central space is a courtyard with windows on both sides of the home, allowing sunlight to pour in from the west, east and the skylights.
Floor Plan is Retained, Every Surface Changed
Dan Shipley, FAIA, called for every surface to be refined including floors, ceilings, windows, the kitchen and bathrooms. For instance, you will now see directly glazed custom quarter sawn oak framed windows that replace the original openings. At the rear of the property Dan Shipley has designed a studio that replaces a greenhouse. A studio as a separate structure is also consistent with the Texas Modern tradition and other works of Scott Lyons that had separate structures integrated with the site plan including 4701 Drexel Drive and 10240 Gaywood Road.
Dan Shipley’s design is respectful of Scott Lyons’ fabulous original design and accentuates its attributes and makes it architecturally and aesthetically current. It is a great victory when an architecturally significant home is preserved. It is an even a greater triumph when a talented architect such as Dan Shipley can create an appealing home that pushes modern design forward. M-Gray Architecture Merges Modernity of Design and Materials With Aesthetics of Preston Hollow
Architect Maurie Gray and architect Mark Gray are a wife and husband architectural team that has designed one of the largest homes on the AIA Dallas home tour. This modern home is in the established and prestigious neighborhood of Preston Hollow. Modernity of design and materials are merged with the aesthetics of Preston Hollow including an expansive lot, a stream and many trees. A connecting structure with an exposed staircase is located over a stream and bridges components of the home.
